About Best Mattresses for Kids

What to prioritise for a child's bed

  • Medium to medium-firm support, which suits a growing spine and works whichever way they end up sleeping.
  • Breathability, because children sleep hot; a hybrid or latex build moves more air than dense foam does.
  • Certified low-emission materials, particularly for younger children. Our organic and natural mattresses collection covers the certified options.
  • A waterproof but breathable mattress protector, which is not optional at this age.

Sizing for how long they will use it

A twin fits most children comfortably until their early teens. A twin XL adds five inches of length and is worth it if they are already tall or if the bed will follow them to a college dorm. A full gives room to sprawl and to sit and read, and is the size families most often say they wish they had bought first time. Check bunk bed and trundle frames for maximum mattress thickness before you choose, since many cap at eight or nine inches for safety.

Bunk beds and trundles

Upper bunks have a height limit set by the guard rail: the mattress must not sit so high that the rail stops being effective. Measure from the slats to the top of the rail and stay comfortably under it. Thinner profiles in this collection are chosen with that in mind.

Bring them with you

Children are surprisingly decisive about beds, and it makes the transition to a new room easier if they picked it. Both Richmond and Katy have kids' models set up, and if budget is the main constraint, the Clearance Center in Rosenberg and mattresses under $1,000 are the places to start.
