About Organic Mattresses

What the certifications actually mean

  • GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standard, covers organic cotton and wool and audits the whole supply chain rather than just the raw fibre.
  • GOLS, the Global Organic Latex Standard, does the same for latex harvested from rubber trees.
  • MADE SAFE and GREENGUARD Gold test for what the finished mattress emits into the room, which is the question that matters most in a bedroom.
  • A mattress described as natural or eco-friendly with no certification behind it is a marketing claim. Ask which standard, and who audited it.

How organic mattresses feel

Latex is the main comfort material, and it behaves differently to memory foam: it pushes back rather than sinking, so you rest more on top of the bed than in it. That suits people who dislike the enveloped feeling, and it sleeps noticeably cooler. Most organic models are offered in medium and firm builds, and many use a hybrid construction with pocketed coils under the latex for support and airflow.

If you sleep on your side and are used to deep contouring, try a latex model next to a conventional side sleeper mattress before deciding. Some people prefer it immediately; others need the extra cushioning. It is worth ten minutes on the floor to find out which you are.

Organic bedding for children

Certified materials matter most in a nursery or a young child's room, where a small body spends twelve hours a day close to the surface. Our kids and youth mattresses collection includes certified organic options in twin and full sizes, and a breathable mattress protector keeps the certification meaningful by keeping the mattress itself clean.

Naturepedic and My Green Mattress are both set up on the floor in Richmond and Katy so you can feel the difference between certified latex and conventional foam directly. Financing and local delivery are available on all of them.
