Serving Thompsons and east-central Fort Bend County, TX

Mattress Store Near Thompsons, TX

Thompsons is a town of 156 people on the south side of the Brazos River, in east-central Fort Bend County. It covers 8.3 square miles, but more than 40 percent of that is water: Smithers Lake sits entirely inside the town limits and takes up most of the western half along with the W.A. Parish generating station. ZIP code 77481, area code 281, and a post office on Oilfield Road. What there is not, and has never been, is a store where you can lie down on eight different mattresses and feel the difference between them.

Richmond is the closest place that has one. The county seat is twelve miles northwest of town, and the drive is about 30 minutes: FM 2759 out of Thompsons, then FM 762 north into Richmond, where our main showroom sits on FM 359. Our Rosenberg showroom is about 35 minutes by the same roads, and our Katy showroom is about 45 minutes north.

All three showrooms keep the same hours, carry the same brands and make the same promises, so the nearest one really is the right one to aim for. One trip is enough to be measured with ScanFit 3D body imaging and to work through firmness, cooling and budget with a Certified Sleep Science Coach before anything is ordered. We are an authorized retailer for every brand we carry, so the full manufacturer warranty applies to whatever goes home with you.

What Thompsons shoppers get when they drive over

Try before you buy

Every mattress on our floor is there to be lain on, in your own sleeping position, for as long as you want to stay on it. Thirty minutes each way is close enough to do the trip properly, and ten minutes on a bed tells you more than an afternoon of reading specification sheets.

ScanFit 3D body imaging

A 3D body scan shows your Sleep Science Coach where your frame needs support and where it needs pressure relief, so the shortlist you test is built around you. Our staff are Certified Sleep Science Coaches with more than 1,000 hours of training behind them.

365-Night Comfort Guarantee

Sleep on your new mattress at home for at least 30 nights, and if the comfort still is not right you can exchange it within 365 nights of delivery for a mattress of equal or greater value. One exchange per customer, and all sales are final.

Delivery out to 77481, plus financing

Choose $99 delivery with in-room setup by our own team, who carry the mattress through the house to the room you want it in, or doorstep delivery at no charge through our shipping partner. Financing is available in the showroom, and our 1-Year Price Guarantee runs for a full year after you buy.

Every brand we carry, about 30 minutes from Thompsons

All of these are available to try in our showrooms, so one drive lets you compare the online-only names against the brands you already know instead of ordering a mattress sight unseen. We are an authorized retailer for every one of them.

A town that is forty percent water, and where the nearest mattress floor is

Thompsons is an unusual shape for a Texas town. Of its 8.3 square miles, only 4.9 are land; the other 3.4 are water, because Smithers Lake lies completely within the town limits. The lake is a 2,140-acre artificial impoundment on Dry Creek, built between August 1956 and July 1957 to supply cooling water, and together with the generating station beside it, it occupies most of the western half of the town.

That leaves a thin band of land along FM 2759 where people actually live, and the 2020 census counted 156 of them. Sugar Land's extraterritorial jurisdiction reaches down to the northern end of town, Rosenberg's sits to the west and Missouri City's approaches from the east, which is a good shorthand for where the shops are: everywhere except here.

For a mattress, that is less of a problem than it sounds. FM 2759 runs about nine miles out of Thompsons to FM 762, and FM 762 carries straight north into Richmond, twelve miles northwest of town. Our main showroom is on FM 359 in Richmond, roughly a 30-minute drive, and it holds the widest selection of anything we have.

If you would rather be expected than arrive cold, book a showroom appointment before you set out and a Certified Sleep Science Coach will be free when you walk in.

From Thompson's Switch to now: a town that has always driven somewhere else to shop

Settlement here began around 1830, when Robert E. Bohannon came to Texas from Alabama on a land grant issued under Stephen F. Austin's colonization contract with the Mexican government. After Bohannon died his widow married Hiram Thompson, who named the community after himself. It became a station on the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe line in 1879, was granted a post office in 1888, and for a while was known simply as Thompson's Switch.

The high-water mark came early. By 1896 roughly 300 people lived here, served by a cotton gin, a general store and two saloons. By 1900 the population was 104. Through the 1920s and into the mid-1940s the town reported about seventy-five residents; the Cane Belt Railroad put a second line through in 1930, and by 1940 Thompsons had a school, a cotton gin, a store and two churches. It reported 100 residents in 1947, 73 in 1972, and incorporated in 1979.

So the habit of driving to Richmond or Rosenberg to buy anything substantial is not new here; it is about 130 years old. The practical consequence for a mattress is simply that the trip is worth planning. Come with your room dimensions, the width of the narrowest doorway between the front door and the bedroom, and your partner if you share the bed. Motion separation is the one thing you cannot test alone, and the drive is too long to make twice by accident.

Shift work at W.A. Parish, and sleeping while the sun is up

The W.A. Parish generating station stands on a 4,664-acre site in Thompsons, rated at 3,653 megawatts across eight units. It is the second largest conventional power station in the United States and supplies around fifteen percent of the energy used in the Houston area. A town of 156 people does not staff a plant that size on its own, but plenty of the households within twenty minutes of here run on a rotating shift because of it, and so do the families around the chemical plants and refineries further east.

Sleeping in daylight asks different things of a mattress than sleeping at night. Heat is the first: a bedroom holding afternoon sun through a Gulf Coast summer starts warmer and stays warmer, so a cooling cover and a breathable coil-and-foam hybrid earn their keep far more than they would for a midnight sleeper. Ask to feel the difference between a cooling hybrid and an all-foam bed back to back; it is obvious within a minute and impossible to judge from a web page.

The second is isolation. If you are asleep at two in the afternoon while the rest of the house is awake, a mattress that transmits every footstep is working against you. Lie down and have someone sit and shift beside you; that is the only honest test of motion separation. Tell your Sleep Science Coach your schedule when you walk in, because it changes the shortlist.

Lamar Consolidated and George Ranch families, and the beds nobody chose

Thompsons is zoned to Lamar Consolidated Independent School District, and its students are zoned to George Ranch High School up toward Richmond. That puts local families on the same roads as our main showroom several times a week already, which is the cheapest way to fit a mattress trip into an ordinary Saturday.

Households out here tend to stay a long time, and in a long-settled house the beds accumulate without anyone ever choosing them. The twin that came with a bunk, the hand-me-down in the guest room, the mattress a child has outgrown without it being noticed: almost none of those were a decision. Moving a child up to a full size is one of the least expensive sleep upgrades a household can make, and it usually buys back more rest than anything else in the room.

Bring the children if you can. Letting a child lie on three mattresses and say which one they prefer is the same test adults get, and it is the difference between a bed that works and an argument every night for the next five years. Parents who care as much about materials as firmness can see and feel organic options from Naturepedic and My Green Mattress on the floor and ask exactly what is inside them.

Guest rooms deserve a sentence too. Out here family comes to stay for a week rather than a night, so a supportive surface at an easy height, with an adjustable base at the head, changes how that week goes.

Mattress shopping near Thompsons

Is there a mattress store in Thompsons, TX?

No. Thompsons has 156 residents and only 4.9 square miles of land, so there is no mattress floor inside the town limits. The closest place to lie on Helix, Brooklyn Bedding, Naturepedic, Tempur-Pedic, WinkBed, Plank, Bear and KOVA one after another is our Richmond showroom on FM 359, about 30 minutes away.

How do I get from Thompsons to your nearest showroom?

Take FM 2759 out of town to FM 762, then follow FM 762 north into Richmond, where our main showroom sits on FM 359. It is about 30 minutes. Our Rosenberg showroom is about 35 minutes, a few minutes further west once you have reached Richmond, and our Katy showroom is about 45 minutes north.

Do you deliver to 77481?

Yes. You can choose $99 delivery with in-room setup, where our own team carries the mattress into the room you want and sets it up, or doorstep delivery at no charge through our shipping partner. Tell us about a long drive, a gate or a tight turn when you order rather than on delivery day.

I work a rotating shift and sleep during the day. What should I look at?

Tell your Sleep Science Coach that first, because it changes the shortlist. Daytime sleepers usually want a cooling cover and a breathable hybrid rather than a dense all-foam bed, and they need good motion separation so the rest of the household does not wake them. Both are easy to test on the floor and impossible to judge online.

What if the mattress does not feel right once it is in the house?

Every mattress we sell carries our 365-Night Comfort Guarantee. Sleep on it for at least 30 nights to let your body adjust, and if the comfort is still wrong you can exchange it within 365 nights of delivery for a mattress of equal or greater value. One exchange per customer, and all sales are final.

Do you have organic mattresses for a child's room?

Yes. Naturepedic and My Green Mattress are both on our floor, so you can feel the materials and ask what is inside them rather than reading a label online. A Certified Sleep Science Coach can walk you and your child along the organic beds and let them pick between two or three.

Try before you buy, about 30 minutes from Thompsons
