Everything on this page ships free within the United States. Most of it is mattresses, in every size from twin through split king, and the rest is the supporting cast: foundations, a few adjustable bases and pillows that make sense to send along with a new bed. If you are shopping for a guest room, a college apartment or a house you have not moved into yet, this is the page to work from, because the delivered price is the price you see.

How to choose when you cannot lie on it first

Start with your sleeping position, not the brand. Side sleepers need the surface to give at the shoulder and hip, so aim for medium or medium-soft. Back and stomach sleepers need the hips held up, which usually means medium-firm or firmer. Once position is settled, pick the build:

• A hybrid mattress pairs conforming comfort layers with a coil unit, giving you contouring plus bounce and airflow. It is the safest choice when two people disagree.
• A memory foam mattress sinks in and cradles, isolates motion well, and suits people who like the feeling of being held rather than sitting on top of the bed.
• If you sleep hot, start with cooling mattresses for hot sleepers, which use breathable covers, gel or graphite infusions and open coil units to move heat away.
• On a tighter budget, mattresses under $1,000 cover the same sizes and builds at entry-level pricing.

Sizes, and the mistake people make

The most common regret we hear is size, not feel. Couples who share a queen and a dog almost always wish they had gone king. Anyone over six feet should look at a California king or a long twin rather than a standard length. Measure the room first, then measure the doorway and the turn at the top of the stairs, because a mattress that will not make the corner is a problem no comfort layer can solve.

Shipping out, or trying it in person

Shipping is the right call when there is no showroom near you, when you already know the model you want, or when you are furnishing a second property. It is not the only option locally.
