About Plank Mattresses

Firm is the hardest feel to buy online. Soft and medium forgive a bad guess; firm does not. A mattress that is firmer than you expected shows up as shoulder and hip pressure on night three, and a mattress that is softer than you wanted never gives your lower back the flat platform you bought it for. That is the whole reason Plank is worth trying in person.

What makes a Plank different

Most Plank models are flippable. One side is firm, the other is extra firm, and the two surfaces are built differently rather than being the same foam with a different label. In practice that means you can live with a bed for a few weeks, decide it is not quite right, and change the feel by turning it over instead of returning it. It also means two people with different opinions have somewhere to meet.

Choosing between the five

  • Plank Essential Hybrid (9 inch) — extra firm, a flat surface with minimal sink, supported by a 6-inch coil unit. The most affordable way into the line.
  • Plank Firm Foam (10 inch) — the all-foam build. Contours a little more than the hybrids and isolates movement better, so it suits couples and lighter sleepers who still want firm.
  • Plank Firm Luxe Hybrid (13 inch) — pocketed coils under the comfort layers for more airflow and more bounce than the foam model, with a quilted extra-firm side.
  • Plank Luxe Zoned Hybrid — a zoned lumbar panel runs through the centre third of both sides, holding the hips up while the shoulders get more give. The one to try if firm beds usually leave your lower back aching.
  • Plank Firm Rx Hybrid (13 inch) — the most forgiving firm in the range. Memory quilt and microcoil layers take the edge off the pressure points without letting you sink.

Who a firm mattress actually suits

Back and stomach sleepers get the most from this category, because a firm surface keeps the hips from dropping out of line with the shoulders. Side sleepers usually want more give at the shoulder, though the zoned and Rx models are the two that side sleepers get on with. If you are shopping firm because of lower back pain, that is worth saying out loud to a Sleep Coach rather than guessing: see our mattresses for back pain relief and our best mattresses for stomach sleepers for the wider picture, or browse the full firm mattress range across every brand we carry.

Questions, answered

Are Plank mattresses actually firm, or just marketed that way?
They are genuinely firm. Plank is Brooklyn Bedding's firm specialist line, and most models are two-sided with a firm side and an extra-firm side. The Essential Hybrid is the firmest flat surface in the range and the Firm Rx is the most forgiving.
What does it mean that a Plank mattress is flippable?
Most Plank models have two usable sleep surfaces built differently from each other — one firm, one extra firm. You can change the feel of the bed by turning it over rather than replacing it, which is useful if you are between two firmness levels.
Which Plank mattress is best for back pain?
The Luxe Zoned Hybrid is the one to try first. A zoned lumbar panel runs through the centre third of both sides, so the hips stay supported while the shoulders get more give. Talk to a Certified Sleep Science Coach in store before deciding — back pain is not one problem with one answer.
Are Plank mattresses good for side sleepers?
Usually not the firmest ones. Side sleepers need give at the shoulder, so the Luxe Zoned Hybrid and the Firm Rx are the two most side sleepers get on with. Back and stomach sleepers suit the range better overall.
Can I try a Plank mattress near Houston?
Yes. Plank is on display at Mattress On Demand in Katy, Richmond and Rosenberg, so you can feel the firm and extra-firm sides before you buy. Call the store first if you want a particular model ready to try.
Who makes Plank mattresses?
