The Plank Luxe Zoned is the one Plank that answers the usual objection to a firm mattress, which is that it punishes your shoulder. It is a 13.25-inch flippable hybrid with a zoned lumbar panel on both faces: 1.5 inches of firmer foam through the centre third that holds the hips up, while the surface above the shoulder stays softer. Flip it and you move between a firm side with a little cushioning and an extra-firm side that is close to flat. Brooklyn Bedding's Plank line is endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association for its firm support, and this is the version of it a side sleeper can actually live with.

Two firm options rather than a firm and a soft. The firm side adds responsive foam for a little give at the shoulder; the extra-firm side is flatter and more supportive. Both keep the centre third reinforced, which is what lets a side sleeper hold a straight spine on a bed this firm. Flip the mattress to change sides - there is no soft side to fall back on.
